For Long Beach City Council

Dear Voters,

As a Long Beach resident with more than two decades of experience working alongside cities, counties, and public institutions, I am running for City Council to support thoughtful, practical decision-making that strengthens our community.

Throughout my career, I have helped public sector leaders navigate complex challenges, develop strategic plans, and implement solutions that improve services for residents. Earlier in my career, I co-owned a retail store in a small coastal town during the 2008 economic downturn. That experience gave me firsthand insight into the realities small businesses face in tourism-driven economies—seasonal fluctuations, workforce challenges, and the pressure of rising costs.

Living through that period deepened my respect for the resilience of coastal communities and reinforced the importance of policies that support local businesses, workers, and long-term economic stability. In my current role, I partner with government leaders, technical teams, and community stakeholders to turn complex issues into clear, actionable decisions.

I have also been deeply committed to community service. As a volunteer mediator with the court and police department, I have helped residents resolve conflicts through constructive dialogue. As former Board President of the Cannon Beach Children’s Center, I worked to support families and strengthen community resources. These experiences have shaped my belief that effective leadership starts with listening, builds through collaboration, and delivers through action.

Long Beach is a special place, and I care deeply about its future. I am running to bring a practical, community-focused perspective to the Council—one that balances economic vitality, livability, and long-term resilience.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Carey Ellen Smith
